Villas between Umbria and Tuscany: Agriturismo Fonte Vinaglia.
Castiglion Fiorentino and the surronding area
Castiglion Fiorentino is a village with Roman origins. It
is a hill town which looks out over the Valle di Chiana
on the one side and Valle di Chio on the other. Castiglion
Fiorentino has a preseved medieval center, which is dominated
by the Cassero fortress. The historic center is made up
of noble buildings: The Gothic church of San Francesco,
the Collegiata, and the Chiesa del Gesu, all rich with precious
works of art. A must see is the Loggiata Vasariano, from
the XVI century; the Castello di Montecchio, built in the
XIII century with it’s castle walls intact; and the
Piazzle del Cassero, where recent archeological digs have
brought to light some remains of an Estrucan wall (IV century
a.C.) The Chiesa di San Angelo boasts an artistic hertitage
of high quality: standing out is the medieval gold jewelry
and the works of Bartolomeo della Gatta and Taddeo Gaddi.
The advantageous position of Castiglion Fiorentino makes
it easily accessible to many important cities of art and
culture in Tuscany and Umbria.

AREZZO:
Ancient Estrucan city with numerous and important archeological
finds. The upper part of city maintains a medieval character,
and there rises la Cattedrale, the Palozzo Comunale,
and The Fortezza Medicea. The beautiful Piazza Grande
is considered one of the most picturesque and original
piazze in Italy and it is where the Giostra del Saracino,
a tournament of horses with period costumes, takes place.
CORTONA:
Cortona was one of the twelve cities of the Estrucan
confederation. At the end of the IV century a.C., it
was allied with Rome and then became Ghibelline in 1325,
and then ranked with the Ranieri family in 1409. It
was sold to Florence and in 1411 followed the Grand
Duke of Tuscany. Few Renaisssance palazzi remain, like
the Palazzo Servini-Cucciati, with it’s portal,
and the town in mainly medieval in character. Don’t
miss the archeological site of the Estrucan tombs, the
Museo dell’Accademia and the Museo di Farneta.
MONTALCINO:
City of Estrucan and Roman times. Situated in the hills
overlooking the Valle d’Arbia, the Valle dell’Ombrone
and the Val d’Orcia. An interesting place to visit
is the Palozzo Comunale, seat of the Museo Civico with
it’s tall towers and facades adorned with coats
of arms. Other places include La Rocca, built in 1361
(outside of Montalcino), and the Romanesque Chiesa dell’Abbazia
Benedettina di S.Antimo. Montacino is also known for
its “Brunello”, a high quality wine.
PIENZA:
Reorganized by Pope Pio II, Pienza was his native birthplace.
It is an excellent example of Renaissance architecture.
Though lacking in major “piazze”, Pienza
is a quiet and tranquil agricultural town filled shops
where one can sample locally made products and enjoy
excellent wine.
MONTEPULCIANO:
Inhabited during Estrucan times, its particular placement
between the Valle di Chiana and Val d’Orcia makes
it one of the most beautiful of hill towns. In ancient
times it was the object of clashes between the Sienese
and Florentines. Admire the Piazza Grande, the highest
point in town with the Palazzo Comunale dating from
1300, and the Duomo, designed by Taddeo di Bartolo.
Sample the famous wine, “vino Nobile di Montepulciano”
and a local sheeps milk cheese, “cacio pecorino”.
LAGO TRASIMENO:
Legend has it that the lovesick nymph of Lake Agilla,
seduced the handsome prince Trasimeno, pulling him under
her watery home. The lake has born his name ever since.
The lake holds it’s ancient troubled history in
its castles, abbies, and churches. There are boats to
for various tourist excursions to the central island
and visit towns like Castiglion del Lago, Touro sul
Trasimeno, and Passignano sul Trasimeno
